Will of William Briginshaw [written William Bregynshaw] of Aston Clinton, Buckinghamshire.

In the name of God, Amen.

In the year of Our Lord God 1507, on the 21st Day of July, I, William Briginshaw of Aston Clinton, whole in mind, make my testament and will in this manner.

First I bequeath my soul to God and to Our Lady St. Mary the Virgin and to all the Saints in Heaven and my body to be buried within the Chapel of Our Lady within the Church of Aston Clinton on the north side of the said Chapel.

Item: I bequeath to the Mother Church of Lincoln 2d.

Item: to the High Altar of the said Church one bushel of wheat.

Item: to the Rood Light there one bushel of wheat and one bushel of malt.

Item: to the Light of Our Lady one bushel of wheat and one bushel of malt.

Item: to St. Nicholas’ Light one bushel of wheat and one bushel of malt.

Item: to the Sepulchre Light one bushel of wheat and one bushel of malt.

Item: to the Torches two bushels of wheat and two bushels of malt.

Item: to the Bells two bushels of wheat and two bushels of malt.

Item: to all other Lights there four apiece (note four of each?).

Item: I bequeath the place that I dwell in and the lands lying thereto to Agnes, my wife, as long as she keep herself sole (single?) and unmarried, and if she marry, then I will that Thomas, my son, shall have the said place and lands on condition that he shall not sell it nor lay it to mortgage. And if he so do then I will that my said place and lands remain to the next of my sons.

And if my son, Thomas, have a son of his body lawfully begotten then he is to have the said place and lands.

And if my son, Thomas, die without issue lawfully begotten then I will that it remain to the next of my sons.

Item: I bequeath to Agnes, my wife, the house that I bought of Cooke and twenty acres with all the appurtenances that belong thereto that I bought of Richard Wanwell and if she marry, and if she marry not (sic)

Then I will that Thomas, my son, shall have it under the condition that he shall not sell it nor lay it to mortgage for then I will that it remain to the next of my sons.

Item: I bequeath my son Thomas half the crop of the Wachys (note field name?). with his mother he having(written being) no charge thereof.

Item: I bequeath Richard my son five pounds.

Item: To Henry my son five pounds.

Item: To William my son five pounds.

Item: To John my son five pounds.

Item: I bequeath to Anne my daughter five marks and two kine.

Item: To Lettice my daughter five marks.

Item: To Agnes my daughter five marks.

And any of these children aforesaid die before they come to lawful age then I will that the

aforesaid good remain to the other of my children.

Item: I bequeath to a priest for to sing for me in the church of Aston Clinton in our Lady Crypt (written Cellar) four marks.

Item: To the highway in Aston Clinton ten shillings.

Item: To the poor people within the town of Aston Clinton eight bushels of malt.

Item: To each of my godchildren fourpence.

Item: I make and ordain to be executors of this my testament Agnes my wife, and William Welles.

And to the same William I give forty shillings and beside that he is to have his reward

(written labour) for all other labours and witnesses (written besynes) that he shall have for me.

Item: The residue of the goods I give to my wife.

And I make Mister John Cheyney, Esquire, my overseer of this my testament and last will and he is to have for his labour forty shillings.

Also I bequeath to Richard, my son, the house that I bought of Cooke and twenty acres that I

bought of Richard Wanwell after the decease of Agnes, my wife.

Proved at Lambeth, 25th August 1512 by oath of the executrix.

(My note: I believe that a mark was 6s 8d, one third of a pound, either that, or 13s 4d).
